Global Congress on STEAM

11-12 February, 2023

Background

The scenario of science education in Bangladesh along with other developing countries are not aligned with the other developed ones. Various numerical statistics conducted all over Bangladesh second to this statement. For instance, according to BANBEIS report on ‘Present Situation of Science Education in Secondary Schools of Bangladesh 2015’, a staggering 45% of science educators in Bangladesh believe that the main purpose of science education was to enlighten students with nothing more than the basic understanding of science and developing scientific literacy. 23% science teachers just want to teach science to prepare the students for upcoming public examinations. Only 26% teachers resonated with the fact that their responsibility as science teachers is to help students relate science with the wider contexts of their everyday life. Since only 6% high schools all across Bangladesh are furnished with science laboratories to helps students learn practically and other systematic and structural constraints such as lack of training facilities for teachers, old-aged lecture-based teaching methodology, etc. are continuously demotivating students towards pursuing science in high school and higher education. This should not be the case since the globalized world right now is emphasizing on specialization and the prospects of employment in science and technology related fields are on the rise. These jobs require the importance of having critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are not well addressed in our present educational curriculum prevalent in Bangladesh. On the contrary, the developed countries are working hard in catering their educational system to the future needs. As a result, many countries all around the world in the American and European continents have adopted STEAM Education. STEAM Education stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics and in this education method, the educators help students develop competencies in all of these disciplines with the help of a multi-disciplinary approach. The advantage of STEAM education is helping students relate a particular phenomenon with different disciplines and thus developing cross-discipline competency. The toolkits and strategies adopted by educators in STEAM Education rely heavily on practical learning. The other benefits of STEAM education are developing technology literacy, computational and thinking skills, critical thinking, collaboration and teambuilding, leadership and cultural competencies, thought exploration, problem-solving, and develops self-influence. Moreover, the advent of COVID-19 pandemic not only changed the dynamics of conducting classes, but also posed a new challenge for science teachers to adapt innovative and exciting methods to teach science concepts to the students.

Sooner or later, Bangladesh and other developing countries need to make a transition towards these time-responsive educational systems. The objective of National STEAM Congress organized by GEIST International Foundation is to provide the educators, curriculum specialists, school administrators, curriculum developers, public sector officials, ed-tech organizations, journalists, STEAM enthusiasts, and researchers with a platform where they can converse on the prospects of STEAM education and how it can be introduced to the education system of Bangladesh. The congress tries to relate the benefits of STEAM education and try to relate it to the context of Bangladesh. Furthermore, the congress acts as a medium for the researchers on STEAM education to communicate their findings across a wider audience. Finally, there are multiple teachers who are working in various regions of Bangladesh who have been adopting innovative teaching methods in science education. The congress acknowledges such significant efforts from the teachers and provides such inspirational teachers with the opportunity to share their methodologies with the teachers and educators present. National STEAM Congress also plays a pivotal role in inspiring the teachers of schools and colleges of Bangladesh under the culture of research and conferences. Such a nationwide conference in Bangladesh is the first of its kind and the involvement of all the important stakeholders makes the congress more fruitful.
